Course Description

Enjoy a week of artistic exploration in the glorious countryside while learning from celebrated artists. This workshop invites you to new techniques in a community setting that will transform your approach to ceramics. Over the course of 5 days (July 28-August 1st) you will be guided in finding your artistic voice, and help narrow in on the aspects of creation that uniquely resonate with you. This inspiring week will be led by Marie Drolet, founder of Muraï Céramique and L'atelier de l'Aube. Marie will be joined by guest artists Janet Keefe, Maria Moldovan & Marie-Hélène Cormier. Coiling with Janet Keefe. Why coil? Because the process offers limitless possibilities for the creation of form. Because though it is simple, with practice, forms can be angular, spherical, complex, sophisticated, subtle and any size. Because almost any clay can be used. Because it requires minimal investment in tools, time and space. Because of the calming effect coiling has on the maker. This workshop will show the participants ways to coil, then how asymmetry can be achieved before they begin work on their own designs.  Learn how to make your own stamps with Marie-Hélène Cormier. This workshop will introduce you to the creation of clay stamps, covering the following themes: tools and materials, exploring shapes and textures, designing and engraving stamps, and using them on slabs. Clay stamps: an infinite universe of decorations for your handbuilt pieces! Let’s face it: Portrait making in ceramics by Maria Moldovan. In a short session, she will present a few options how to approach the creation of a portrait depending on size and material. She will demonstrate how to build a small scale portrait out of cone 6 stoneware. Emphasis will be put on anatomical structure, right proportions, character design, surface finish and also on technical details related to the proper hand building techniques. The demonstrations and discussion times will be held in the morning with blocks of time dedicated to working on your personal projects in the afternoon. This course is designed for students with previous ceramics experience. All materials are included in the price. Bring your favorite tools, a water bottle and lunch.
